University enhances creative opportunities through collaboration with Port Eliot Festival

For the third year, the University’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities was the official Creative and Cultural Partner of the iconic annual event.

The University of Plymouth created exciting opportunities for students, staff and the public alike as it expanded its partnership with the iconic Port Eliot Festival, which took place in south-east Cornwall from July 27 – 30, 2017.

The collaboration saw a range of activities taking place on the University campus and in the wider community including an outreach project with local schools to highlight opportunities and progression routes in, and through, the creative industries.

Then during the festival itself, students and academic staff worked alongside established professional artists and designers to stage workshops in a range of craft and design practices in collaboration with Hole & Corner magazine. They will created a daily newspaper for the festival and in partnership with Creative Kernow, showcased Cornish design creativity through the ERDF funded Cultivator initiative.

Meanwhile, academics from across the arts and sciences will showcased their world-leading research as part of science events in the iconic Port Eliot Round Room.

The collaboration is coordinated by the University’s Creative Cultivator unit, which exists to nurture and support external engagement, knowledge transfer and collaborations between academia, the creative industries and wider community

David Hotchkiss, Centre Manager for the Creative Cultivator unit, added:

“Port Eliot Festival is a truly amazing experience and a perfect match to the University’s creative sector remit. This third year of our formal relationship recognises both organisations’ belief in the importance of the creative and cultural sectors as a significant element in the South West’s economic ecosystem and we are really excited about the opportunities the partnership provides.”

“Our partnership with the University has undoubtedly brought an extra level of energy to the festival. Its creative team has helped programme a string of memorable science happenings that have really lived up to their unique backdrop in the Round Room. And we’re glad to have enabled students to experience at close range how the festival is planned, managed and brought to life. We look forward to continuing our fruitful relationship this year and beyond.”

Port Eliot aims to inspire and surprise as it draws an unmatchable collection of artists, musicians, writers, comedians, performers, thinkers, makers, protagonists, agitators and scribblers to one of the most beautiful corners of the country.
